Flying to Vietnam on a One-Way Ticket: What to Expect

By NeedReturn · Last reviewed

Maybe you're planning to work your way down from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and then figure out where to go next. Or maybe you're coming from Manila, Bogotá or São Paulo and haven't settled on a return date. A one-way ticket to Vietnam feels freeing, right up until you start wondering whether check-in will let you board.

Here's what official sources say as of October 2026 and how to get ready, without guesswork and without shortcuts that could backfire.

First, how are you entering Vietnam?

What matters most for a one-way trip is the date by which you must leave. That date depends on whether you're visa-exempt or on an e-visa.

Visa exemption: depends on your passport

Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes the official visa exemption list. A few points that matter to this site's readers:

Check your own passport against the current list. It has changed several times in recent years.

E-visa: up to 90 days, fixed dates

Vietnam's Immigration Department says its e-visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days, single or multiple entry (Vietnam Immigration portal). Two points from the U.S. State Department are worth reading twice:

GOV.UK adds that e-visas restrict you to the entry and exit points you choose when applying (GOV.UK – Vietnam entry requirements). Apply only through the official portal, which the U.S. State Department notes helps you avoid scams.

Does Vietnam require an onward ticket?

The official pages we checked (Vietnam's Immigration portal, its MOFA exemption list, travel.state.gov and GOV.UK) do not state a single, universal onward-ticket rule for all visitors. That does not mean nobody will ask:

So the practical answer: expect the question, and be ready with an honest answer. Ask your airline what it requires for your route and passport.

Practical checklist for a one-way trip to Vietnam

  1. Know your leave-by date. Visa exemption (21 or 45 days, depending on passport) or e-visa dates. GOV.UK advises checking that the date stamped in your passport is correct before you leave border control.
  2. Plan to exit before that date. If your plans are open-ended, request e-visa dates that give you a buffer, because extensions aren't available.
  3. Passport: six months' validity beyond arrival and blank pages (GOV.UK). Enter and exit on the same passport.
  4. Arrival formalities: travel.state.gov mentions a pre-arrival declaration for air arrivals. GOV.UK says a digital arrival card is encouraged (not currently mandatory) at Tan Son Nhat (SGN) from 15 April 2026. Check what applies on your travel date.
  5. Prepare honest proof of onward travel in case the airline asks (options below).

Legitimate options if you don't know your exit date

What a sample itinerary is for

A NeedReturn sample itinerary can help you map out a route, compare dates against your visa window, or share an idea with a travel partner. It is clearly a sample, not a booking, and must not be shown as proof of a ticket.

FAQ

Can I fly to Vietnam with only a one-way ticket?

Many people do, but your airline may ask how you'll leave, and immigration decides admission. Know your leave-by date and have an honest onward plan ready. Confirm requirements with your airline.

Can I extend my Vietnam e-visa if I decide to stay longer?

According to the U.S. State Department, Vietnam doesn't allow e-visas to be renewed or extended in the country. Choose your dates carefully when you apply.

Do Filipinos need a visa for Vietnam?

Vietnam's MOFA list shows Philippine ordinary passport holders are visa-exempt for 21 days. For longer stays, look into the e-visa. Always check the current list before travel.
